ButterKit

A Mac app that turns raw simulator captures into App Store screenshots and pushes the metadata, for indie app developers.

ButterKit is a native Mac app for the least glamorous hour of shipping an app: building the App Store screenshots and the metadata that sit beside them. You drag in a raw simulator capture, drop it into a template with a device frame around it, translate the set into any of the 50 App Store languages, and push the whole listing to App Store Connect through Apple’s own API. It costs $79 once, or nothing at all if you can live with a watermark.

It belongs to the same small class as Sitful: a native app that does one narrow job and respects the machine while it does it. The work it replaces is a solo developer fighting design templates the night before a launch, or pasting translated strings into App Store Connect by hand, one language tab at a time. Zach Spitulski built it alone and ships in the open, and the public changelog is the kind of receipt that tells you the app is tended rather than parked.

The pricing is the quiet argument. In a market that has decided every tool must be a subscription, ButterKit asks $79 once and means it. That fits the shape of the work, because you build screenshots a handful of times a year, at launch and big updates, not every morning. It is also why the $10-a-month Supporter tier reads as a tip jar for people who like the app, not a plan most developers actually need.

Two edges are worth naming before you buy. The headline says all 50 languages instantly, but only eighteen translate on your Mac; the other thirty-two want you to bring, and pay for, your own translation API key. And “you built it, ButterKit sells it” is the confident overclaim of good marketing. Sharp screenshots raise the conversion on an app people already want. They do not rescue one nobody does.

Our take: if you ship to the App Store and dread the screenshot afternoon, $79 for a tool you own outright is an easy call. Run the free version through one real launch first, watermark and all, and buy Pro when that watermark is the only thing left irritating you.

What's good

  • Native Mac app: drag a capture in, push to App Store Connect
  • A one-time $79 that never expires, in a market of subscriptions
  • The free tier is real: every template, every language, just watermarked
  • A solo maker who ships, with a public changelog to show it

What's rough

  • "All 50 languages" holds for 18; the rest need your own API key
  • Apple only, so half the app stores are out of reach
  • "ButterKit sells it" oversells: screenshots lift a good app, not a weak one
